Death of Mr. Peter A. Burke
Mr. Peter A. Burke, one of the most prominent citizens of
Tignish passed away Friday afternoon at the age of 72.
Mr. Burke, accompanied by his wife while enroute to
Alberton, stopped at the home of Mr. Watson Hardy Montrose. On return to his auto to resume his trip he
suffered a heart attack and died instantly.
The deceased was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Burke, Alma,
PEI. He was probably best known for the
success of his many years as cheesemaker in Alma and later Tignish where he had
resided for the score of years. He was
also most successful in his general management of the Bellevue Hotel in
Tignish.
There
are left to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father, his sorrowing wife,
the former Gertrude Alyward of Pleasant View,; four daughters, (Irene) Mrs.
John E. Cameron, Summerside; (Myrtle) Mrs. Lloyd Foley of New York; (Florence)
Rev. Sister Mary Leonard of the Order of St. Martha, Charlottetown; and
(Bernice) Mrs. Donald Davis, Montague.
His only son Leonard, was killed in England while serving with the Air
Force during World War II. He is also
survived by one sister, Mrs. Gertrude Brown, Mass., USA.
Funeral services were held on Monday morning, November 22nd,
from his late residence in Tignish to the Church of St. Simon and St. Judy
where Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rev. J.A. MacDonald. Assistants in the mass were: Deacon Rev. M.J.
Rooney, Bloomfield; sub-deacon, Rev. Edmund Roach, St. Dunstan’s University;
master of ceremonies, Rev. William Simpson, St. Dunstan’s University. Seated in the sanctuary were Rev. Claude
Shea, R.C.A.F. Station, Summerside; Rev.
Louis Dooley, Brae; Rev. Emmanuel Richard, Palmer Road; Rev. Joseph N. Trainor,
St. Mark’s; Rev. Terence Campbell, St. Dunstan’s University; Rev. Father
Sinnott, Alberton. The choir was under
the direction of Rev. Denis Gallant, Tignish.
The organist was Leonard Gallant.
Honorary pall bearers were: Hon. J.A. Bernard, Messrs.
C.F. Morrissey, John B. Myricks, Justin McCarthy, J.B. Morrissey, John B. Christopher,
Francis Ready, A.D. O’Brien, Joseph T. Arsenault, James O’Brien, James Christopher,
Francis Kinch.
Active pall bearers were Messrs. Gerald Handrahan, Joseph
Macdonald, Fidele Arsenault, Camille Chaisson, Howard Dunbar and Roy
Clohossey. Interment was in the church
cemetery.
